Yes. UpToDate is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit for point-of-care research, which TMB counts as formal CME toward your 24 formal credits. It can't satisfy topic rules that need a specific course, such as HHSC-approved human trafficking. UpToDate reports credit to CME Passport, not CE Broker, so enter it in CE Broker yourself.

Does UpToDate CME count toward Texas formal hours?

Yes. TMB counts AMA PRA Category 1 credit from an ACCME-accredited sponsor as formal CME, and Wolters Kluwer says UpToDate is ACCME-accredited and awards Category 1 credit. Texas requires at least 24 formal credits of your 48 every two years, and redeemed UpToDate credit can count toward them once you report it in CE Broker.

See the formal vs informal rules and the glossary entry for Category 1.

How many CME credits does UpToDate give?

Wolters Kluwer designates each completed internet point-of-care learning cycle for 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. You earn credit only when you search a clinical question first, then reflect on how you applied the answer. Trainee-rate subscriptions don't earn CME, and Wolters Kluwer lists separate credit terms for AAFP, AOA and nurse practitioner users.

  • AAFP: up to 20.00 Point of Care Prescribed credits. Wolters Kluwer lists the approval term as 10/31/2025 to 10/30/2026, so check the page for a renewed term after Oct. 30, 2026.
  • AOA: recognized as AOA Category 2 credit.
  • Nurse practitioners (AANP): 1.0 contact hour per hour.

How do I claim UpToDate CME credit?

Log in to UpToDate and click the CME link. Choose Select Credits, or Redeem Now for credits you've already reflected on, then pick the credits and click Continue. Point-of-care users reflect on the goal of each search and how they applied it, answer the evaluation questions and submit. Redeem within two years of earning the credit.

  1. Click CME in UpToDate's top navigation.
  2. Click Select Credits (or Redeem Now if you've already reflected), choose the credits and click Continue.
  3. Reflect on the goal of each search and how you applied it to your practice.
  4. Answer the evaluation questions and click Submit.
  5. On the CME History page, view, download and print your certificate and activity log.

These steps follow Wolters Kluwer's UpToDate User Academy. Screens can change, so match the labels in your account.

Does UpToDate report CME to CE Broker?

No. Wolters Kluwer says UpToDate reports physician credit to CME Passport through ACCME's PARS system, and that physicians may still be responsible for submitting credits to their state board. For Texas renewals on or after September 1, 2026, TMB checks CME only through CE Broker, so add each UpToDate certificate there yourself.

Report it in CE Broker

  1. Download the certificate from UpToDate's CME History.
  2. In CE Broker, click Report CE and choose Formal Category 1 or 1A Hours.
  3. Enter the completion date, activity name, provider and hours exactly as the certificate shows them.
  4. Attach the certificate and submit.

Our tip: redeem in batches before you report, so each certificate becomes one CE Broker entry. Screen-by-screen steps are in how to report CME in CE Broker.

What UpToDate can't cover for Texas

UpToDate credit counts as general formal credit. It won't satisfy human trafficking, which must be an HHSC-approved course, or the Life of the Mother Act course, which TMB offers only in MyTMB. Ethics hours need a course approved for ethics credit by the accrediting agency, and Wolters Kluwer's CME pages don't describe UpToDate credit that way.

See Texas human trafficking CME and what counts as Texas ethics CME.

Do osteopathic physicians get Category 1-A credit from UpToDate?

No. Wolters Kluwer says the AOA recognizes UpToDate as AOA Category 2 credit, not 1-A. That doesn't change your Texas license math: TMB counts AMA PRA Category 1 credit as formal CME for every physician, MD or DO, so UpToDate's Category 1 credit still counts toward your Texas formal hours.

Do residents earn UpToDate CME?

Not on trainee-rate subscriptions, according to Wolters Kluwer. Residents on a Physician-in-Training permit don't need Texas CME anyway, TMB says. Once you hold a full Texas license and a subscription that earns CME, your point-of-care searches start accruing Category 1 credit that you can redeem and then report in CE Broker.
